Workshop Activities: Active Learning Strategy for Teaching Integrated Sciences within the “Beginning” Initiative

As part of the presidential initiative “A New Beginning for Building the Egyptian Individual,” launched by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and under the patronage of Professor Dr. Hassan Al-Noumani, President of Sohag University, and the supervision of Professor Dr. Hussein Taha Atta Salem, Dean of the Faculty, a workshop titled “Active Learning Strategy for Teaching Integrated Sciences” was successfully held on Monday, October 21, 2024, in Training Hall 1 at the Green Hall.

The workshop was supported by:

  • Professor Dr. Hussein Taha, Dean of the Faculty,
  • Professor Dr. Emad Samuel, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development.

The workshop was led by:

  • Associate Professor Dr. Manal Ali Hassan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Science Teaching Methods, and Director of the Teacher Professional Development Unit at the Faculty of Education.

Target Audience

The workshop targeted science, physics, biology, and chemistry teachers and supervisors, as well as those involved in teaching integrated sciences.

Objectives of the Workshop

The workshop aimed to:

  1. Provide knowledge and skills on active learning, its key strategies, obstacles, and ways to overcome them.
  2. Clarify the roles of teacher and student in applying active learning strategies.
  3. Apply active learning strategies in teaching the integrated sciences curriculum for first-year high school.
  4. Address current issues in the integrated sciences curriculum and ways to resolve them.
  5. Outline essential qualities for science, physics, chemistry, and biology teachers to adopt active learning strategies.
  6. Distinguish between traditional learning and active learning.

Discussions and Outcomes

  • Supervisors discussed key challenges in teaching the curriculum and explored solutions.
  • Participants were introduced to the unit’s tasks and means of communication with the Teacher Professional Development Unit. They shared positive feedback on the workshop and provided suggestions for further training courses to enhance their skills and meet the demands of the job market.
  • Common issues faced by science teachers and supervisors were also discussed.

The Dean of the Faculty and the Vice Dean for Community Service attended and commended the crucial role of teachers and supervisors in the educational process, emphasizing the importance of skill development to keep pace with advancements.

Certificates were distributed to attendees, and a commitment was made to hold future training courses and workshops for all specializations to maximize the benefit and fulfill the core objectives of the Professional Development Center.
