Prof. Hussein Taha Atta Salem

Dean of the Faculty of Education

Historical Overview

The Faculty of Education in Sohag was established in November 1971 as a branch of the Faculty of Education in Assiut. Initially, students were admitted through transfers from equivalent faculties of education, primarily students from Sohag Governorate who wished to join the faculty. Starting from the academic year 1972-1973, the faculty became independent and began admitting students through the national admission system.

The faculty initially started with two specializations: Mathematics and Physics-Chemistry in the academic year 1971/1972. A History specialization was introduced in the academic year 1973/1974, and in 1977/1978, two more specializations were added: Natural History and Arabic Language. The faculty gradually expanded, introducing new specializations to meet the growing demand for teachers in various disciplines required by the Directorate of Education in Sohag Governorate, fulfilling its role in serving the local community.

With the issuance of the internal regulations of the Faculty of Education in Sohag by the Supreme Council of Universities on December 29, 1988, the faculty offered ten specializations at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate studies began in 1975/1976 with the initiation of the first and second years of the Special Diploma in Education. In the same year, registration for master’s and doctoral degrees was launched. The General Diploma in Education (two-year system) was introduced in 1982/1983. Following the issuance of new regulations on July 26, 1995, the faculty began offering a one-year General Diploma in Education, a Professional Diploma in Education, in addition to the previously established diplomas and postgraduate studies.

The Faculty of Education in Sohag also publishes the “Educational Journal,” a biannual peer-reviewed scientific journal. The first issue was published in 1986. Since its inception, the journal has adhered to the traditions of scientific research, peer review, and publication. Its mission is to advance scientific research in the field of educational sciences, establish a solid foundation for addressing pressing educational issues in the contemporary world, and propose solutions to contribute to the progress and prosperity of Egypt and the Arab world for a better future.
